Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an innovative area of computer science which resorts to computers and machines to simulate human intelligence. At present, AI is applied across industries in several domains, including in its more complex and complicated forms, such as machine learning and deep learning. Despite its recent introduction, Generative AI is already being applied in several areas of daily life, politics being just one of them. This development is not without ethical and legal issues, considering the role of AI in the proliferation of disinformation and propaganda, which can constitute a threat to democracy and lead to the erosion of the public trust in the media. This research paper aims to discuss the role and potential impact of AI in political life. The structure of this paper is as follows: an introduction to AI technology, followed by a cost-benefit analysis of the usage of AI in politics and a prospective evaluation of short, medium and long-term contributions of AI in the transformation of the global political system.
